From Clarkson’s Favourite Road to Robin Hood’s Waterfall: A Yorkshire Dales Adventure

A Perfect Dales Drive: Swaledale to Wensleydale (with plenty of stops along the way)

If you’re looking for the ultimate Yorkshire Dales day out, this one’s hard to beat. Start your morning right here in Reeth , heart of Swaledale , and head up dale, through Healaugh, Low Row, G unnerside and Muker — one of the prettiest stretches of the Dales you’ll ever see. I promise, this is one of those drives where you’ll be pulling over every few minutes just to take it all in. The dry-stone walls, the wide green pastures, the timeless barns — pure Dales majesty.

After Muker and nearly in Thwaite, turn left. Climb steadily up the Buttertubs Pass , one of the most dramatic roads in the country. The climb twists and turns through sweeping moorland, before opening up to those iconic limestone sinkholes known as the “Buttertubs.” Pull in, park up and explore the extraordinary pot holes, where historically, Swaledale farmers stored their butter and produce to keep it cool on their way to sell it at market in Hawes.

It’s easy to see why Jeremy Clarkson once called this his favourite drive in the UK. He's filmed many segments test driving cars for Top Gear along here, and calls it "Englands only spectacular road". If you want to see him driving it, see Series 10, episode 6 and Series 16, episode 5. Most famously, Series 22, episode 10 - which is unaired - was filmed around Hawes and the Buttertubs, when the incident occurred which led to Jeremy's dismissal from the show.

The Buttertubs pass is also famous for being part of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ — if you stand at the summit, it’s not hard to picture the peloton powering up this steep climb to a wall of cheering crowds. It'll test your brakes on the way down!

Once you drop down the other side into Wensleydale , through Simonstone , you’ve got a choice of adventures. Turn right and head for Hardraw , where you’ll find Hardraw Force , England’s highest single-drop waterfall. You’ll need to park behind the Green Dragon Inn to reach it — a wonderfully atmospheric pub where you can grab lunch before (or after) your walk. Sunday Lunch is highly recommended by us! Pay for entry to walk to the fall via the cafe behind the pub. - Fun fact - the waterfall and cafe is owned by Mr Mark Thompson, who also owned The Kings Arms in Reeth for many years! He has invested heavily over the years since owning the fall and has made it a really lovely walk for all the family to enjoy.

Film lovers might recognise Hardraw Force from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves — yes, that’s where Kevin Costner famously bathed beneath the falls. and was first spotted by Maid Marion!

Alternatively, if a waterfall walk is not your jam, drive into Hawes. The bustling little market town known for the Wensleydale Creamery . Take a tour, meet the cheesemakers, and sample the cheese that made Wallace & Gromit so happy.

If you prefer something a little more scenic, continue east from Hawes to Aysgarth Falls , another Robin Hood filming location. These tiered waterfalls are beautiful in every season — especially after rain — and just over the road is the Mill Race Tea Room , the perfect stop for a slice of cake or a light lunch in the old mill building.

If you’d like to take the quieter route home, instead of heading to Hawes, from Simonstone turn left and drive back towards Askrigg , once home to my ancestors the Burton family (my great-great-grandparents are laid to rest there, among many other family members). It’s a lovely Dales village steeped in history — you might spot the lime-washed church tower of St. Oswald’s Church, a recent and rather controversial restoration that has become quite the talking point locally. Personally, I love it! It gleams proudly across the Dale and can be seen for miles. Another waterfall walk can be found in Askrigg - steeped in my personal family history as this is where the Burton family started their foray into producing electricity for the dales, before moving to Reeth to do the same. Mill Gill Force is a short walk from the village centre and the old mill buildings and mill race can still be seen. Don’t miss The Bake-Well for a treat or two before heading back.

Round off the loop via Castle Bolton (Bolton Castle is well worth a stop if you love history), then climb over Grinton Moor and drop back into Reeth , where the village green — and perhaps a cosy fire in the Black Bull, Buck or the Kings Arms — await.

It’s one of those drives that really captures what makes the Yorkshire Dales so special: wild landscapes, rich history, and welcoming places to stop along the way. Whether you’re staying with us at Reeth Holiday Cottages or just passing through, this is a route to remember.

Walking in Swaledale with kids - Family-Friendly Routes and Activities

With the bank holidays coming up in May and the Summer Holidays on the horizon, we have put together a list of family friendly walks and activities to really make the most of your stay in beautiful Swaledale.

Swaledale is a beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales, with its rolling hills, wildflower meadows, and winding river valleys. It's an ideal place for a family walking holiday, with plenty of easy routes that kids of all ages will love. Here are some family-friendly routes and activities to try in Swaledale.

Muker to Keld

This gentle walk is perfect for families with younger children, taking you through some of Swaledale's prettiest countryside. Start in the picturesque village of Muker and follow the river as it winds its way through meadows and pastures, passing traditional stone barns and old packhorse bridges along the way. The walk finishes in the tiny hamlet of Keld, where you can stop for a picnic or get some drinks and home baked goodies from the famous Rukin's campsite.

Gunnerside to Swinner Gill

For older children who enjoy a bit of a challenge, this eight-mile circular walk takes you up onto the high moors above Swaledale, where you'll enjoy stunning views across the valley. The route starts in the village of Gunnerside and follows the river in Gunnerside Gill before passing old mine workings and disused quarry buildings. Head west uphill and over moorland tracks to Swinner Gill, where you'll find waterfalls and cascades tumbling down the rocks. The views from the top of Swinner Gill are hard to beat! From there, the path leads back down to Gunnerside via the hamlet of Ivelet.

Aysgarth Falls

The waterfalls at Aysgarth are a popular spot for families, with plenty of easy paths and picnic areas. The falls are actually made up of three separate cascades, each with its own character and charm. You can explore the lower falls on a gentle walk along the river, or head up to the upper falls for more of a challenge. There's also a visitor center with interactive displays and information about the local wildlife.

Richmond Castle

For a break from walking, why not head to Richmond and explore the castle? This impressive fortress dates back to the 11th century and has plenty of history to discover, including a medieval keep, a Victorian prison, and even a secret tunnel. Kids will love dressing up as knights and princesses and exploring the castle's nooks and crannies.

Swaledale Museum

If you want to learn more about the history and culture of Swaledale, head to the Swaledale Museum in the village of Reeth. The museum is housed in a former Methodist School Room and has a fascinating collection of exhibits, including old farming tools, local crafts, with a focus on the area's lead mining heritage. Keep an eye out for our very own slice of history, with an exhibit about my Great Grandfather, William Handley Burton who owned the Reeth and Askrigg Electric Supply Company and brought Electricity to Reeth in 1911.

This is just a small snippet of things to do for the whole family, but as you can see, Swaledale is a fantastic destination for a family walking holiday, with plenty of routes and activities to suit all ages and abilities. Whether you're exploring the waterfalls at Aysgarth or climbing up onto the moors above Gunnerside, you're sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all our readers! What a ride 2021 turned out to be.

Some amazing highs, and some devastating lows.

The highs are what give us life in this business! Meeting all our lovely guests, seeing all the cottages full, and people on their holidays enjoying their well earned time in the Dales. It makes us burst with joy and pride to hear the lovely comments from our guests who are relaxing in the places we have put our hearts and souls into.

A real high in 2021 was winning an award!! “Self Catering Accommodation Providers of the Year 2021/2022” for Yorkshire. We are so grateful to whoever nominated us. We have a wonderful trophy on our mantel piece now which we will look at in amazement for a good while! I don’t think it will ever get old!

The lows… the lows have given us time to slow down and reflect. Being closed down due to covid until 12th April was so sad. That said, it really gave us time to work on and enhance our procedures, from our T’s and C’s, our correspondences, our cleaning and arrival and departure protocols, not a lot has stayed the same, but it will remain as we have it now as we feel it works so much better for us all.

Out with the old…

This month, we are starting with a renovation in Turbine House Kitchen. We didn’t touch this during our big renovations in 2018 as it was still relatively new.

Although it is still fine… we do think it could work so much better! We aim to create extra space, integrating the fridge/freezer and installing a dishwasher which will really enhance our guests’ experience. Watch this space to see how it is going to change. We are looking forward to working with our local tradesmen again!

Getting ready to start on renovations again has got us thinking about the huge renovation projects we had in 2018 and 2019. Head over to our instagram and Facebook pages to see some epic “Before and After” shots… who doesn’t love a good before and after picture!!

Summer 2022 has extremely limited availability so if you would like have a break with us, be sure to book soon. Turbine House is the only one with much availability, so you could be one of the first to experience the new layout! Fantastic Festive Events in the Yorkshire Dales this Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year is almost here!

Christmas 2020 was full of lockdowns and cancellations, so we’re definitely intending to make the most of the 2021 festive season. There are so many fun things happening in God’s Own Country this season – from artisan Christmas markets to spectacular light trails, Santa’s grotto visits and festive train rides, and so much more.

Festive Days Out in the Yorkshire Dales

If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids to meet Santa this year, look no further than Mother Shipton’s . Their magical Christmas experience is due to take place from Saturday 4th – Friday 24th December, giving children the opportunity to meet with the big man himself. Wander through their wonderful winter woodland and discover an enchanted Christmas Village, complete with festive delights and costumed characters. Take an ‘elfie’ inside Santa’s sleigh, sit upon the Christmas throne, or post your letters to Santa via the Elf Mail.

Give your kids a Christmas experience they will never forget at The Polar Express train ride in Wensleydale. Taking place on selected dates from 19th November – 23rd December, you can ride the only licensed Polar Express in Yorkshire. Begin your journey on the Polar Express, where you will meet the film’s favourite characters including the conductor, singing chefs, hobo and of course, Father Christmas. Make your way to the North Pole and marvel upon the Northern Lights, before arriving and meeting Santa Claus himself.

Embark upon a wintery Alice in Wonderland adventure this Christmas at Lightwater Valley . Running from selected dates up until 23rd December, you will find hundreds of illuminated lanterns, illustrating tales from the infamous Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. Play chess on a giant board, join the Mad Hatter at his crazy tea party, marvel at the whopping four-metre-tall Alice lantern, and meet the Queen of Hearts herself.

Experience true wonder at Fountain Abbey’s Music & Lights Christmas events. They have a jam-packed calendar full of festive treats this December, including various musical acts and entertainers. See the abbey ruins come to life with hundreds of twinkling coloured lights. Walk beneath the vaulted ceilings in the cellarium and watch the live choirs and bands fill the ruins with festive tunes. Singalong optional!

Follow the festive trail through the amazing Thorp Perrow Arboretum to find Santa’s grotto. You will receive a warm welcome from Mrs Claus, who will guide you through their magical winter wonderland. Stop and say hello to the donkeys, get a sneak peek into the elves’ bedroom and wander around the miniature ski village. Challenge your friends or family to see how many woodland creatures you can spot on the way – prizes for the winner optional!

Christmas Markets & Tree Farms in the Yorkshire Dales

Richmond Christmas Market is back and bigger than ever in 2022. With more stalls and variety than ever before, you can find hundreds of artisan traders both inside the Town Hall and outside in the marketplace. Live entertainment is also included this year, with a competition held for the most festive stall.

Low Lane Christmas Trees is our local Christmas tree supplier, situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Their numerous varieties of Christmas trees are grown right here in Yorkshire, ranging from pot grown to 15ft plus. They also stock a range of handmade wreaths – both plain and decorated. Look no further for your Christmas tree!

Amazing Autumnal Adventures in the Yorkshire Dales

Autumn is a truly wonderful time of year to visit the celebrated Yorkshire Dales. The Dales becomes an artist’s delight in the colder months, adding amazing autumn hues to its vibrant colour palette. Enjoy a stroll through the Dales as the leaves begin to fall or discover the county’s rich history in a quintessentially British castle, before curling up in front of a log fire in a hearty country pub.

As the summer rush finally comes to an end, it’s the perfect excuse to get cosy in a luxury cottage this autumn. So, why not soak up the wonders of mother nature this season at Reeth Holiday Cottages?!

Wonderful Walks

Yes, the weather is starting to turn a little bit colder – but don’t let that put you off heading outdoors at this spectacular time of year. The Dales boasts a unique collection of fantastic walking spots, from fascinating fells to wonderful woodlands…

Aysgarth Falls is a series of stepped waterfalls, situated on the River Ure in Wensleydale. Well-known for its appearance in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, this is a much-loved Dales beauty spot. The falls look particularly spectacular in the autumn time, after the Dales have been drenched in rain – the rush of running water contrasting against the colourful foliage is truly a sight to behold!

Thorp Perrow is home to some of the largest and rarest trees in England, with the leaves turning into rich shades of gold, amber and red in the autumn season. Follow the various nature trails dotted amongst the many acres of woodland and revel in the autumn colours, before heading over to the Bird of Pray and Mammal Centre to meet the feathered, furry, and scaled residents.

Hardraw Force is England’s highest above-ground waterfall, providing the most stunning setting for an autumnal stroll. Set behind the beautiful village of Hardraw near Hawes, the falls have inspired scenes from multiple movies. This spectacular 100ft drop fall is one of the most popular attractions in the whole of the Dales and is well worth a visit during your autumn break.

Quaint Castles

The Yorkshire Dales boasts some of the finest castles in the whole of Britain, providing a fun yet educational family day out. Our county is well known for its history; from William the Conqueror to the War of the Roses, Yorkshire is a staple feature in England’s past…

Bolton Castle is a well-preserved square fortress, set in the picturesque Dales town of Leyburn. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for a year in 1658 and was also besieged by parliament during the English Civil War. This Grade I listed building offers pristine grounds and gardens, including a designated rose garden, vineyard and even a large maze.

Richmond Castle is a huge, powerful castle, teetering on a high cliff overlooking the spectacular River Swale. Built in the 11th Century by the Normans, the castle was originally known as Riche Mount, meaning ‘the strong hill’. Take a stroll around the cockpit garden, admire the exhibitions on display, or simply take in the wonderful views of the Yorkshire Dales.

Middleham Castle was once a mighty fortress so magnificent that it was known as the ‘Windsor of the North’. Today, the castle has fallen into ruin, sitting on a hill between the meandering rivers of Cover and Ure. The castle can be traced back to just after the Norman conquest and was once home to Richard III.

Picturesque Pubs

They say it’s grim up North, but we beg to differ! The Yorkshire Dales is positively teeming with snug pubs with toasty log fires – ideal for huddling around on a cold autumn day. After a long autumnal ramble, tuck into some hearty food and tasty tipples at one of the Dales’ finest pubs…

The King’s Arms is our local village pub, just a short walk away from our self-catering cottages. This child and dog-friendly country pub is popular with tourists and locals alike and is celebrated for its locally sourced food and traditional cask ales. Settle down by the roaring log inglenook fire and enjoy comfort at its finest.

The Black Bull in our village is well worth a visit, just a short walk away from our self-catering cottages. As Reeth’s oldest surviving inn, The Black Bull is a firm favourite with the locals. Boasting a fine selection of real ales, quality wines and homecooked food, this traditional pub complete with exposed beams and a roaring fire provides the ideal pit stop whilst walking in the Dales.

Tan Hill Inn is famous for being the UK’s highest pub, sitting at a whopping 1732ft above sea level. Dating back to the 17th Century, the pub still features exposed beams, stone-flagged flooring, and a crackling open fire. After a long day exploring the Yorkshire Dales, why not curl up by the fire with one of their amazing ‘ales from the Dales’?!

The Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw near Hawes is a charming country pub with a rich history. Situated right next to the Hardraw Force waterfall, the inn dates right back to the 13th Century. Boasting some stunning original features, you can put your feet up by the cosy wood burner whilst enjoying some delicious hearty pub grub.

Horrifying Halloween Events

If you’re searching for somewhere to take the kids this Halloween, look no further than the Yorkshire Dales for some frightening family fun! Whether you enjoy the adrenalin kick that comes with feeling scared or prefer something a bit tamer, our beautiful county has got you covered this October…

The Forbidden Corner will be opening its creaky doors to your little monsters on the 16th October; wander around the eerie grounds and uncover the supernatural creatures that lurk in the shadows. Thorp Perrow’s Halloween Trail kicks off on the 9th October; with terrifying tombs, spooky skeletons and more Halloween frights hidden amongst the woodland.

Bolton Abbey’s Pumpkin Trail will be providing some horrifying half-term fun; navigate the spooktacular Strid Wood and collect the creepy clues to help solve the Halloween puzzle. Kiplin Hall’s Crowe’s Wood Halloween Trail is set to return on 16th October; offering a world of frighteningly good fun and fantasy this spooky season.

The 6 Most Impressive Waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales

Have you been to visit the Yorkshire Dales yet? Our four luxury self-catering cottages are situated in the glorious village of Reeth, tucked away in the corner of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. Reeth is a bustling hub of activity, perfect for exploring the celebrated Yorkshire Dales. Our cottages are extremely popular amongst walkers and visitors to the area.

The Yorkshire Dales is one of the most picturesque areas in the whole of the UK and is arguably the waterfall capital of England. The county is awash with waterfalls of all shapes and sizes, with its dramatic landscapes boasting cascading falls. The Yorkshire Dales features the highest waterfalls in England both below and above ground, as well as the highest single drop waterfall in the country.

We have compiled a handy list of our favourite waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales; so you can spend less time researching, and more time exploring. All the below walks can be found on the OS Maps app, which guests can access whilst staying at our cottages.

The Incredible Ingleton Waterfalls

Ingleton Waterfalls is arguably the most impressive waterfall spot in the whole of the Yorkshire Dales and has been a popular tourist attraction for over 100 years. The designated Ingleton Waterfalls walk welcomes visitors to discover its extensive collection of wonderful waterfalls, all situated on one route. Complete the seven-mile circular trek from the car park in Ingleton (LA6 3ET) and look out for the picturesque Pecca Falls, the brilliant Beezley Falls and the star of the show, the terrific Thornton Force. If you’re feeling a bit peckish, you can stop off at the family-run café for a bite to eat or grab a refreshment from the trail’s hut.

The Amazing Aysgarth Falls

This awe-inspiring collection of three steeped waterfalls stretches for over half a mile on the banks of the River Ure. Aysgarth Falls are divided into the high, middle, and lower falls, with limestone steps passing through them. Venture on this stunning 6km circular walk, beginning from the Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre (DL8 3TH) . They are the most visited waterfalls in all the Dales due to their location and are extremely easy to access; you can see the upper falls from the Yore Bridge and reach the middle and lower falls via a well-trodden path in Freeholders’ Wood. These three cascades have attracted many famous visitors, including Wordsworth and Turner. More recently, they have provided a spectacular setting for a scene from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

The Historic Hardraw Force

Hidden behind the Green Dragon Inn in Hawes (DL8 3LZ) , Hardraw Force is the longest single drop waterfall in England, measuring in at 100ft. These dramatic waterfalls are nestled amongst wonderful woodland, just a short walk from the pub on a well-marked path – which is even suitable for wheelchair users. Hardraw Force is one of the most popular attractions in Wensleydale, welcoming visitors from near and afar to discover mother nature in all her glory. But be aware; in dry conditions, the falls may be just a trickle. Similar to Aysgarth Falls, Robin Hood also bathes beneath Hardraw Force in the Prince of Thieves film.

Janet’s Foss: The Fairy Falls

This small cascade near Malham is one of the most spectacular sights in the Yorkshire Dales. This truly enchanted fall is named after Janet, the Queen of the Fairies, who supposedly lived in a cave behind the waterfall. Situated in an idyllic wooden glen, the falls look like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. We recommend visiting Janet’s Foss via the Malham Trail, beginning at Malham National Park Centre (BD23 4DA) . Enjoy a wonderful walk through Wedber Wood and discover this truly magical fall; a fun day out for all the family.

The Celebrated Cautley Spout

Cautley Spout is Britain’s highest overground cascade, falling for over 200m off Howgill Fells. This long series of waterfalls can be found within the wooded Foss Gill, literally meaning ‘waterfall gill’. These fantastic falls can be seen from a great distance and are best viewed on approach. We recommend parking at the Cross Keys Inn (LA10 5NE) and completing the 9km walk for a truly amazing day out. Be aware; the hike to the top of the waterfall is very steep and difficult, but the panoramic views make all that hard work worthwhile. Cautley Spout is a great choice for keen hikers.

The Wonderful Wain Wath Force

This popular waterfall is situated in Keld, Upper Swaledale (DL11 6DZ) . This truly scenic spot beside the River Swale boasts a series of small-stepped falls, which can be easily viewed from the roadside. Wain Wath Force is an easy waterfall to get to by car, with no long walk involved – ideal for people with mobility issues. The falls are located near the amazing Ravenseat Farm , home of the Yorkshire shepherdess. We highly recommend calling in for a delicious cream tea after your walk around the wonderful Wain Wath Force!

Yorkshire Dales Wildlife: 2021 Grouse Shooting Season

The annual grouse shooting season is one of the most celebrated events in the Yorkshire Dales calendar; beginning on the Glorious Twelfth (12th August) and lasting until 10th December. Moorland owners and gamekeepers of the Yorkshire Dales carry out vital conservation work on more than 226,000 acres of precious heather moorland across the area, many of which are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

During the late summer season, our beautiful Dales moorland really is a sight to behold. The heather is in full bloom on our uplands, turning the hills a vivid purple. The heather provides the perfect habitat for the remarkable red grouse. Keep reading to discover more about our important work in moorland management…

Red grouse are ground-nesting birds that are found on upland heathlands; however, they are under threat from predators, diseases, and the loss of habitats. These wonderful creatures are wild and free – unlike many other birds, their population is not maintained by releasing hand-reared birds. They are territorial and move around very little, and with the right conditions and management, they can breed in large numbers.

Grouse shooting has huge economic, social, and environmental significance in our area, and it is due to shooting that the red grouse has not found itself on the endangered species list. The lovely lean, dark meat is treasured by chefs from near and afar. Often referred to as the ‘king of game birds’, the meat is rich in flavours and completely wild and sustainable. Red grouse meat is very healthy and in high demand, containing less than 1/3rd of the fat found in chicken. You will no doubt see grouse on the menu in many of our local eateries during the season – do try it if you can!

British Moorland Management

Moorlands cover huge areas of upland in the UK, dominated by purple heather that creates a kaleidoscope of violet hues in the summertime. In fact, the UK is home to 75% of the world’s heather moorland, which is now rarer than the rainforest as a habitat. Therefore, it is vital to maintain and preserve this unique upland environment.

Heather burning , cutting, and grazing are all important steps to maintaining this habitat. It is also vital to manage pests and predators, control diseases and ticks, and restore damaged peatland. Heather burning involves quick, ‘cool’ burning of small areas of heather, which serves to remove older heather and encourage the growth of new heather shoots. Without burning, the heather would eventually turn woody, have very little nutritional value, and support little wildlife.

Spectacular Shoot Days

Whilst walking upon the moors, you may stumble across a shoot. What a wonderful sight! Many different people are involved in running a shoot day; an average of 50 local workers per day who like to get involved and enjoy a day out on the moors. Teams of beaters, flankers, loaders, pickers up and caterers, ranging from the age of 13 upwards, all really enjoy the comradery of the day's activities. The local hotels, restaurants and pubs are always busy when a shoot is taking place during the season – a good season can equate to over 1600 overnight stays in our local area! A great boost to our delicate economy.

The Benefits of Moorland Management

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of skilled gamekeepers, the Yorkshire Dales’ heather is home to an abundance of wildlife; from threatened species such as curlew , merlin , and lapwing , to specialist flora such as sphagnum mosses , bilberry , and cross-leaved heath .

The magical moorland supports at least 76 bird species, with 43 of these being endangered. When moors are managed for grouse shooting, ground-nesting birds including curlew and lapwing are on average 3.5x more likely to successfully raise a chick. Birds of prey such as peregrine falcons , buzzards , kestrels , and golden eagles also thrive on the moorland. Predators such as foxes, carrion crows, stoats, and weasels are carefully controlled, encouraging a range of reptiles, small mammals, and invertebrates to make the moorlands their home. This is just a brief insight into the benefits of managing moorland – it’s not just all about the shooting!

Nature truly comes alive in the Yorkshire Dales during the summer months. Birds and animals are hard at work feeding their young, whilst the spectacular hay meadows reach their peak. There is no finer sight or smell than a hay meadow in full flower on a hot summer’s day!

Swaledale boasts some of the Dales’ finest hay meadows, which are best experienced in late June to early July. Keep reading to discover more about the Yorkshire Dales’ very own delightful hay meadows…

The History of the Hay Meadow

Hay meadows are an iconic feature of the quintessential English countryside. The meadows provide essential habitats to around 120 species of wonderful wildflowers and glorious grasses; as well as many species of mammals, invertebrates and birds. Mature hay meadows can take many years to create, in order to allow the species of flora and fauna to truly thrive.

Hay meadows also post great agricultural significance. Historically, hay meadows were a vital source of animal fodder, providing farmers with much-needed food for their livestock during the winter months. Now, silage making has begun to replace hay making. This is because silage is more nutritious than hay, the grass can be cut much earlier and there is no drying required. Therefore, it is vitally important that we protect these important habitats and the species that inhabit them.

The Yorkshire Dales contains around 1/6th of the UK’s remaining upland hay meadows, mostly scattered amongst Langstrothdale, Ribblesdale, Arkengarthdale and Swaledale. Unfortunately, over 95% of hay meadows in the UK have been lost over the last 50 years, so any remaining hay meadows are renowned for both their beauty and biodiversity.

Fascinating Flora & Fauna

The spectacular sights, sounds and smells of a wildflower meadow in full bloom is a truly enchanting experience. In upland hay meadows (the type found here in the Dales), you will find species including Wood Crane’s-bill , Melancholy Thistle , Yellow Rattle , Pignut , Lady’s Mantle , Rough Hawkbit , Cat’s-ear and Sweet Vernal Grass ; as well as rare plants such as the Butterfly Orchid , Burnt Orchid , Montane Eyebright and Small-White Orchid .

As well as providing important feeding habitats for birds and insects, hay meadows emit the most scent-sational fragrances. Meadowsweet has a vague medicinal smell, Lady’s Bedstraw acts as a mild sedative and is often used to stuff mattresses, and Sweet Vernal Grass has the most delicious vanilla scent. When blended with other botanical matter such as Lady’s Mantle , Crane’s-bill , Buttercups , Yellow Rattle and Clover , you will find yourself with the most fragrant, tastiest hay possible.

At peak flowering time, hay meadows positively hum with bees, hoverflies, moths, and a whole array of other insects. These insects serve as invaluable food for visiting swallows that swoop across the meadows. If you stay for long enough, you may even witness a curlew, skylark or kestrel as they go about their business!

Muker’s Magical Hay Meadows

Sitting at the head of Swaledale at the confluence of the Straw Beck and River Swale, Muker, meaning “the narrow newly cultivated field” in old Norse, is one of the most idyllic villages in the Dales. Boasting a meandering river and spectacular scenery, the Muker area is one of the best places to explore the vibrant upland hay meadows.

Some areas are protected as part of the Muker Meadows Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Northern Pennine Dales Meadows Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Four of Muker’s meadows were also included in the Top 60 Coronation Meadows by The Prince of Wales in 2013; celebrating Muker as a surviving “jewel of the crown”.

Muker contains a vast network of footpaths, some of which take you directly through these stunning wildflower habitats. The area contains twelve wildflower fields in total – six of which feature marked paths and two of which are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Tucked away from the outside world, Muker provides the most dramatic example of flower rich fields in the whole of the UK.

Discover the enchanting explosion of colour and amazing abundance of wildlife during a wonderful walk around Muker. Venture along the marked stone path which snakes through several small fields, carefully divided by sturdy drystone walls. The valley floor is positively carpeted in a sea of colour – the product of years and years of careful management from dedicated Dales’ farmers.

The Spectacular Swaledale Festival Returns!

After being cancelled last year, we are delighted that the renowned Swaledale Festival has returned in 2021! This celebration of music and arts has been running since 1972, situated in the three most northern areas of the Yorkshire Dales: Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale.

Beginning on the Saturday of the late May Bank Holiday each year, the festival boasts marvellous musical acts, artistic workshops, children’s events, guided walks and much more. This year, festival organisers have decided to spread events over a six-month period, instead of the usual 2 weeks. Many events have been so popular that they are already sold out, but there are still tickets remaining for the following…

Entertaining Events

The all-star Family Fun Days are set to take place on Reeth Green over the May Bank Holiday weekend. These three days are jam-packed full of outdoor activities and workshops, making for the ideal bank holiday treat for the children. With kite making workshops, live music performances and dance classes, there is fun to be had by all. And what’s more, the events are totally FREE to attend. We hope to see you there!

Waterfalls of the Swale on Saturday 29th May, beginning at the Keld Resource Centre. This 2-mile gentle walk covers 7 of the finest waterfalls in Keld.
River Swale & Gunnerside Ghyll on Wednesday 1st September, beginning near the B6270 Crackpot/Summer Lodge junction. This 6-mile moderate route focuses on river wildlife.
Flora of Lower Swaledale on Tuesday 14th September, beginning at Yorke Square Car Park in Richmond Green. This 4-mile route passes by ancient abbeys, bridges, and railway tracks.

Human Only Hikes

The following walks are suitable for humans only – sorry to all the four-legged friends out there!

Barns, Walls & Bridges on Saturday 17th July, beginning at Hawes National Park Centre. This 4.5-mile explores the “Herriot Country”, with an optional visit to Hardraw Force (£3 entry).
Foxglove Covert on Tuesday 3rd August, beginning at Cambrai Lines Barracks. This 2.5-mile ramble explores a lovely nature reserve, tucked away in Europe’s largest military garrison.
Falls, Freeholders & Flagstones on Friday 1st October, beginning at Aysgarth Falls National Park Centre. This 5-mile walk explores the history of Caperby, passing by all 3 Aysgarth falls.

Marvellous Music

With folk duos, classic music concertos and contemporary acts, there is something for all you music lovers out there. Venues include St. Andrew’s Church in Grinton, St. Mary’s Church in Richmond, and St. Andrew’s Church in Aysgarth, with prices ranging from £12-£16 for adults and £3 for under 25s.

The Young’uns on Sunday 30th May in Leyburn. These three folksingers from Stockton will be performing haunting songs and sharing captivating tales of characters in the North East.
The Hut People on Saturday 17th July in Hawes. Swaledale Festival’s favourite popular folk duo will be performing a range of folk songs from across the globe.
Brighde Chaimbeul (Scottish small pipes) & Aiden O’Rourke (violin) on Wednesday 6th October in Grinton. This duo features a talented young Scottish piper and superstar violinist.

Other Entertaining Ensembles

Lotte Betts Dean (mezzo-soprano) & Sean Shibe (guitar) on Thursday 15th July in Grinton. This duo will perform songs by Schubert and Debussy, as well as Spanish and Brazilian tunes.
Solus Trumpet Ensemble on Tuesday 3rd August in Grinton. This brass band includes five trumpeters who often perform with the Philharmonia and London Symphony Orchestra.
Aurora Percussion Duo on Tuesday 14th September in Richmond. These two percussion stars will be performing musical masterpieces using a variety of percussion instruments.

The village is only a short two-minute stroll from our four luxury self-catering cottages and the community of Reeth is always bustling with activity. Wonderful Walks

Reeth is home to a wide network of wonderful walks, with one of our favourites being the walk to the River Swale Suspension Bridge (“swing bridge”) and back via Fremington. The suspension bridge crosses the magnificent River Swale just outside of Reeth and was originally built back in the 1920s. This stunning short walk is ideal for all the family, passing through the fascinating, varied landscapes of Harkerside Moor, Grinton, Low Fremington and Arkle Beck.

Spectacular Cycling

The Dales Bike Centre is quite possibly the largest bike hire centre in the Yorkshire Dales. Choose from over 40 quality current models of e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes and hybrid bikes during your half day or full day of cycling. Bike hire includes a helmet, route map, pump, and small spares pack – ensuring you stay safe and secure during your cycle adventure. The team are extremely helpful and can suggest a wide variety of trails and tracks, from easy-going beginner routes to challenging mountain bike runs.

Marvellous Museum

The Swaledale Museum is an independent museum run by group of volunteers, displaying the local history of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. The museum houses displays on geology, prehistoric landscape archaeology, farming, tools & trades, music & methodism, local crafts, shopping in the Dales and much more. It is the perfect day out for the whole family to enjoy.

Superb Shopping in Reeth

Reeth boasts a plethora of opportunities for a spot of shopping. The village is well-known for its brilliant range of arts and crafts stores and galleries – ideal for the keen creative!

Nutmeg Gallery sells 3D cross stitch projects including miniature houses, Christmas decorations, keepsakes, gift boxes and greeting cards. They also offer cross stitch kits which are suitable for both beginners and more experienced stitchers.

The Threshing Barn produces a wide range of textile craft kits, as well as their own brand hand-dyed wool, silks, knitting yarn and other fibres. They also stock spinning wheels, craft tools and looms – ideal for budding spinners, weavers, and knitters.

The Fleece is a not-for-profit organisation selling a unique and exciting range of crafts. All their arts and crafts are handmade by designers and artists here in the Yorkshire Dales and nearby areas. The shop is run by the artists who sell their wares there, so you will be sure to meet some talented people!

Reeth is home to multiple cafés, bakeries, and tearooms, as well as a family run ice cream parlour. Whether you prefer sweet or savoury treats, there’s something for everyone here in Reeth!

Brilliant Bakery

The Two Dales Bakery is an artisan bakery, café, and shop, serving fantastic food with a welcoming atmosphere. They sell a wide variety of homemade loaves and pastries, as well as tasty breakfast and lunch options. All their breads and pastries are made on-site using the highest quality local ingredients – their sourdough bread is to die for! They also offer a fantastic takeaway service.

Cosy Cafés

Overton House is a lovely café offering a selection of homemade light lunches, snacks, and treats, as well as a wide variety of hot and cold drinks. Ivy Cottage is Reeth’s newly refurbished tearoom, serving locally soups, scones and cake made from locally sourced ingredients, as well as a delicious Afternoon Tea. Finally, the Dales Bike Centre Café & Cakery is well worth a visit after a hard day of cycling. Enjoy tucking into the best Yorkshire Tea and Lonton Coffee around.

Idyllic Ice Cream Parlour

The Thrilling Thorp Perrow

Thorp Perrow is the most important arboretum in the North of England, with its 100 acres currently housing 5 National Plant Collections and 51 Champion Trees – some of the largest and rarest trees in the UK. Take a trip around the world and discover plants from the likes of China, Japan, Chile, North America, and Europe.

Visit the brilliant Bird of Prey & Mammal Centre and befriend exotic animals and birds. The Bird of Prey Centre features incredible hawks, eagles, owls, and falcons, as well as an aviary area with finches, budgies, parakeets, and canaries. Or you can meet the marvellous meerkats, wonderful wallabies, Pygmy Goats, and rare breed sheep in the dedicated Mammal Centre.

The amazing Adventure Play Area provides the ideal opportunity for children to play and let off some steam. Newby Hall’s collection of award-winning gardens offering the most stunning setting for a family day out. The gardens were created in the early 1920s and they really are a sight to behold. The Double Herbaceous Border boasts an exotic kaleidoscope of stunning summer colours, with Sylvia’s Garden providing the perfect corner for a peaceful family picnic. Marvel at the New World Salvias in the amazing Autumn Garden, or trek through the wonderful Woodland & Rock Gardens. If it’s a particularly hot day, the kids can splash play in the cool water fountain on site – but make sure you bring a change of clothes!

The glorious grounds also house an impressive Adventure Playground, designed for kids of all ages to enjoy. The Fantastic Forbidden Corner

This marvellous maze of hidden tunnels, chambers, and follies is guaranteed to keep the kids’ entertained. This four-acre garden is set in the heart of Tupgill Park, providing the ideal environment for keen explorers and adventures of all ages. Featuring the temple of the underworld, the eye of the needle, a huge glass pyramid, fascinating statues and a plethora of pathways and passages, the Forbidden Corner offers a fun family day out with a difference.

The Brilliant Brimham Rocks

This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a hive of activity for geologists, climbers, walkers, and families alike. These dramatic moorland rock formations were naturally crafted by 320 million years of earth movement and extreme weather conditions. The weird and wonderful rock shapes resemble well-loved animals; discover the Dancing Bear, the Gorilla, the Eagle, and the Turtle during your visit. Children can even crawl through the Smartie Tube and climb up on the Rocking Stones.

The Brimham Rocks site is currently open and is totally FREE to visit, so is well worth the hour car journey. There is no booking required – find out more about their opening guidelines here .

Discover the Beauty of Mother Nature

The natural world wakes up from its winter slumber and bursts into life again during springtime. With the warmer weather and longer days comes more daylight hours for getting outdoors and exploring the Yorkshire Dales’ most picturesque beauty spots. Lambs and daffodils are synonymous with spring – discover the blossoming flowers and playful lambs that inhabit the Dales landscape during your Yorkshire spring staycation.

The Yorkshire Dales boasts a plethora of wildflower walks and carpets upon carpets of beautiful bluebells. There are many fantastic walking trails and cycle routes near Reeth, but the following are particularly spectacular during the springtime:

Gunnerside in Upper Swaledale is a classic Dales terrain made up of ancient drystone walls and rustic barns. It is well worth a visit in late spring, when the wildflower meadows are at their best.
Thorpe Perrow Arboretum is home to one of the finest daffodil collections in Northern England, including many old and unusual varieties. Embark upon long walks through meadows of pretty bluebells, daffodils, and snowdrops.
Constable Burton Hall Gardens is located just outside the picturesque market town of Leyburn. There are plenty of walks through the formal gardens and surrounding woodland, which are simply stunning during springtime.

There will be Family Fun Days hosted on the village green over the May bank holiday (29th-31st May), with kite-making, brass bands, dancing and more expected to grace our village. Yorkshire Dales Dark Sky Festival: A Stargazer’s Paradise

The spectacular Dark Skies Festivals are a significant event in the stargazing calendar, taking place each year in National Parks around the UK. National Parks boast the best dark skies in the country; discover the wonders of the natural world and observe up to 2,000 stars on a clear night.

Yorkshire Dales was recently awarded Dark Sky Reserve status by the International Dark Sky Association. Our beautiful national park is largely free from light pollution, allowing you to gaze upon the Milky Way, meteors, planets and even the Northern Lights from a picturesque area covering over 3500km of northern England.

2021 Dark Skies Festival Goes Virtual

This year, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks are teaming up with Go Stargazing to bring viewers a fantastic virtual festival. The sixth annual Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies Festival will be held from 12th-28th February 2021, providing fun and entertainment for individuals of all ages.

This year’s theme is Nature at Night: emphasising the important of preserving our wonderful dark skies to benefit local wildlife. Minimal light pollution ensures habitats remain untouched and plants continue to grow, allowing nocturnal species to thrive.

A Picture-Perfect Programme

The programme features an amazing line-up of speakers and experts, including leading astronomers, scientists, conservationists and photographers. Discover the night sky from the comfort of your own home via presentations, interactive tours, activities, quizzes and more.

Scientists will be sharing their latest exciting discoveries and upcoming space projects, including NASA’s spacecraft landing on Mars (18th February). Embark upon virtual stargazing and moon-watching expeditions, before gazing upon the night sky for your own DIY tour of the stars. In the second week of the festival, the full moon is due to make an appearance; documented via a live MoonWatch and Q&A session.

Throughout the two week-programme, wildlife and conservation experts discuss how conserving our night skies can help to protect wildlife, such as moths and hedgehogs. Photographers will also be sharing tips on how to take great astronomy pictures. If you’re looking for some family entertainment, there are plenty of early evening sessions for children to enjoy.

The Yorkshire Dales: A Designated Dark Sky Reserve

We are delighted that our wonderful Yorkshire Dales National Park has been awarded Dark Sky Reserve status! We are so proud to be surrounded by such a stunning area of natural beauty, offering incredible opportunities for keen stargazers. Have you been stargazing in the Yorkshire Dales yet?

A Dedicated Dark Sky Reserve Area

In December 2020, the International Dark-Sky Association added the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks to their wonderful collection of Dark Sky Reserves here in the UK. The IDSA labelled the parks as “global leaders in dark-sky conservation” – a real achievement for the National Park, who have been campaigning for the status since 2015.

Dark Sky Reserve statuses are awarded to areas with low light pollution and excellent conditions for stargazing. The five other reserves in the UK are the Brecon Beacons National Park, Snowdonia National Park, Cranborne Chase, Exmoor National Park and Moore’s Reserve in the South Downs National Park. Combined, the two Yorkshire national parks make up the largest dark sky area in the UK, and one of the biggest in Europe.

Stunning Stargazing at the National Park

Stargazers travel from near and afar to discover the beauty of the night sky as seen from Yorkshire. Large expanses of the park are completely free from any local light pollution; allowing visitors to witness thousands of stars, planets, and meteor, as well as the Northern Lights and International Space Station on certain occasions. When conditions are optimal, up to 2000 stars are visible from the park.

Visiting the Yorkshire Dales National Park

There are four designated Dark Sky Discovery Sites within the park: Hawes, Malham, Buckden and Tan Hill Inn. Hawes National Park Centre and Tan Hill Inn are both just half an hours’ drive from Reeth Holiday Cottages, whereas Malham National Park Centre and Buckden National Park are around an hour away.

As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, walking and hiking may not be viable options for much longer; but fear not, as there are still plenty of activities and days out nearby for all the family to enjoy. The Dales is home to some of the finest and most picturesque castles in the whole of the UK – so why not step back in time and pick up some historical knowledge during your Yorkshire staycation?

Richmond Castle

Richmond Castle is situated at the peak of the river Swale, and is just a short drive away from Reeth Holiday Cottages. The castle offers spectacular views of the Yorkshire Dales, and has been wowing Brits since its foundation back in the 1070s. Richmond Castle is one of the finest 11th Century fortresses in the UK; with a fascinating history that spans many prominent eras, there is so much to discover at this stunning English Heritage site.

Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is perched on a high rock formation above the idyllic River Tees, and is just half an hour’s drive from Reeth. The castle is located on the edge of a small market town (also known as ‘Barney’), and features breath-taking views over the Tees Gorge. Barnard Castle takes its name from 12th Century founder Bernard de Balliol, before it finally ended up in Richard III’s possession.

Egglestone Abbey

Discover the ancient ruins of the fascinating Egglestone Abbey nestled above the River Tees, just a stone’s throw away from the nearby Barnard Castle. Boasting the charming remains of a small 13th Century Premonstratensian 13th Century abbey, you can still view much of the church building and living quarters, as well as evidence of their innovative toilet drainage system.

Middleham Castle

At under half an hours’ drive from Reeth Holiday Cottages, this beautiful castle dominates the picturesque town of Middleham in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Once home to Richard III, you can rediscover the castle’s rich history and view the roofless ruins of this spectacular fortified palace. With the viewing platform offering panoramic views of the Wensleydale valley and remains of the oven and horse mill still present today, Middleham Castle makes for the ideal family day out.

Rievaulx Abbey

If you’re willing to venture just that little bit further, why not discover the impressive remains of North England’s first Cistercian abbey? Retreat to this peaceful valley in the North York Moors and gain a valuable insight into the lives of the monks who resided at Rievaulx Abbey. The adjoining museum displays unique artefacts, which tell the story of the rise and fall of one of England’s superior Cistercian monasteries.

Lead Mining in the Yorkshire Dales

Swaledale, located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is known mainly for its idyllic countryside. The vast glacial valley runs from Keld to Richmond, offering breath taking views of the rugged and wild terrain. But did you know that Swaledale has a strong industrial past? Lead mining has majorly shaped the landscape that can still be seen across the Yorkshire Dales today…

From the 16th Century to the early 20th Century, the Dales landscape was revolutionised by the rapid growth in mining and smelting. Minerals were extracted from veins beneath the moors; specifically galena, which produces lead. By the 18th Century, Britain was the world’s biggest lead producer, with the Yorkshire Dales at its core. The end of the industry occurred at the start of the 20th Century, with the final lead mine in the Dales closing in 1912.

Several ruined mine buildings and workings can still be seen across the Dales today. Many of the side valleys jutting from Gunnerside Gill and Arkengarthdale may seem natural, but in fact they were created by man a couple of hundred years ago – the miners used damns to create large artificial lakes. There is so much history to discover: find fascinating circular markings in the ground, where “bell pit” shafts were depressed and ore was extracted; explore “bouse teams” (sets of bunkers) which were used to store the ore (bouse); or, if you are brave enough, venture into the ruins of underground mines with one of our local caving groups.

Old Gang Smelting Mill

The Old Gang Smelting Mill is located near Reeth in Swaledale. It was built in 1790 and used until 1899. The mill has been very well-preserved, with the entire chimney still intact. The Old Gang Mining Company also had a mine shop situated beside Gunnerside Beck, which is still visible today.

Crackpot Hall

Crackpot Hall is a ruined farm near Keld which is very popular amongst walkers. The ruined farm was once used as offices by a successful lead mining company. Bottles and sticks of dynamite left behind by the miners have been previously found nearby.

Sir Francis Level

Sir Francis Level in Gunnerside contains ancient engines and winding machinery, hidden deep underground. These were the most recent operations in Gunnerside Gill, from 1864 – 1891.

Bunton Level

Bunton Level is another site that is easy to explore on Gunnerside Gill. The area was opened in 1802 and eventually closed in 1898.

The Swaledale Museum in Reeth is jam-packed full of old artefacts from the era, and there are many fantastic walks right on our doorstep; allowing you to get up close and personal with the fascinating historical remains of the lead mining industry.

Spectacular Walks in Reeth

The Yorkshire Dales are truly spectacular, especially in the summer time! Featuring numerous hills with jaw-dropping views, tranquil woodlands and picturesque riversides, there is nowhere else in the world quite like it. The surroundings also boast an abundance of charming wildlife, from livestock and farming animals to the most incredible array of birdlife. It is certainly worth taking some time out during your stay at Reeth Holiday Cottages to appreciate the sights and sounds of nature.

Fremington Edge

Reeth Holiday Cottages sit at the foot of Fremington Edge; a magnificent hillside with a wide network of footpaths to follow. This is a more challenging ridge walk, beginning in Reeth and passing through Langthwaite. Explore hidden gills, free-flowing rivers and magical woodland, before beginning your ascent up the hill to admire the jaw-dropping views of the valley below.

Gunnerside Gill

Gunnerside Gill is a beautiful circular walk, beginning at Gunnerside near the Kings Head pub and passing through Swaledale and Muker. Wander through magnificent woodland, disused lead mines, picturesque streams, glorious moorlands and wonderful waterfalls on this scenic walking trail. The walk takes around 2-3 hours and is very easy to follow using the OS Maps app.

Kisdon Hill

Ideal for families with children, Kisdon Hill is a circular walk boasting dramatic views. The trail begins in Muker and passes Kisdon Hill, before finishing near the Keld Waterfalls. There are a couple of different options available; you can either follow a lower level circuit of Kisdon Hill, or walk over Kisdon Hill itself. Enjoy the pleasant grassy paths and breath-taking views from the hillside, as well as the beautiful village of Keld and the Kisdon Force Waterfall, during this family friendly 5-6-mile walk.

The Swale Trail

The Swale Trail opened a couple of years back, and is a purpose-made track for cyclists, horses and walking. If you are not a particularly confident cyclist, don’t worry; the trail offers gentler cycling opportunities for children and less experienced cyclists. Beginning at the Dales Bike Centre, the trail runs between Reeth and Keld in Swaledale. As you travel towards Keld, you will be rewarded with stunning views and splendid waterfalls, as well as the opportunity to view historical remains of the ancient lead-mining industry.

Coast to Coast Walk

This spectacular cross-country walk begins at St Bees on the west coast and ends at Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. The route runs directly through the village of Reeth, meaning you can begin or finish 2 sections right here at our cottages. Amble along the mighty River Swale, explore the vastness of our wonderful country and climb peaceful hillsides on this glorious exploration.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge

Just 40 minutes’ drive from our holiday cottages, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is an ideal day out for keen adventurers. In under 12 hours, you can explore the magnificent peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. These three iconic peaks are arranged in a triangular formation, with the idyllic River Ribble and the Ribblehead Viaduct at its core. If you’re up for a challenge during your stay here, look no further than the Yorkshire 3 Peaks!

Gunnerside Gill walk

Gunnerside Gill, up on to Reeth Moor, back to Gunnerside

Yesterday was such a beautiful, crisp winter day I needed to get out into the wild and appreciate all we have around us.

I fancied putting to the test the OS Maps app that we have for our cottage guests to use, but have never actually used myself!

From past experience I knew that we can’t use the app if we have no phone service and that is quite often when we are around and about our beautiful Swaledale. We can, however, download and save maps and routes to use with no signal so with a bit of planning that’s exactly where I started.

Using the app I first searched for routes that other users had uploaded. There’s so many just in Gunnerside but not the route I was intending to explore. I set out my own route. This sounds more technical than it is! A few taps on the screen and the route finder clings to the best paths to use and voila! My walking trail can begin. 6.5 miles to be precise, with 1946m of ascent.

Driving up to Gunnerside to set off for this route I see just how bright the day is. I park up in the village centre and take the footpath up the side of Gunnerside beck, just opposite the pub. I set my app away so that it can follow my progress.

The first few hundred meters is following the beck side in the trees and along muddy, leafy paths. It’s been frosty overnight and the ground isn’t quite thawed out just yet. I love walking at this time of year with all the smells of the woodlands and sound of the beck in full flow.

It’s a very gradual up hill amongst the trees, just enough to let me know how unfit I am! It didn’t seem like much of an incline but my goodness I’m feeling it.

The footpath is easy to follow and I am up and out of the woods in no time. The land suddenly widens and opens up to flat grassland with rocky beck sides. A little further up we find the broken remains of so many lead mining buildings. “Sir Francis Level dressing floor” is the first one that meets us coming up the Gill. A stark reminder of the industry that preceded our time here.

From the flat down at the beck side, the footpath starts to climb higher up the steep Gill side. I’m now on unknown territory! A quick check of my OS Map and I see I’m still on the right footpath. I pass more broken down lead mining buildings, this time high up on the gill side, surrounded by spoil heaps. The other side of the gill is similarly dotted with old industrious buildings surrounded by spoil. Oh the stories they could tell~!

Here I find a 4 way footpath sign. Right then. Which way?! Out comes the app again. Straight on, heading up. Soon I am following a track that curves back upwards to the moor track. Yes! I know where I am! The app can go away again. I follow the moor track along from the top of Gunnerside Gill back down towards Melbecks and Merry Field. I love this little area, we came up here on our wedding day to have photos taken next to the old stone crusher.

I follow the moor track and just past merry field grouse butts, take a right and follow the track through the sheep fold and onto Brownsey Moor. The view from here is the best on the entire walk. Just wow. What a day, what a view. And knowing that from here it is down hill all the way to the pub…

Another look at the app and I see its only 2 miles back to Gunnerside. But from here I can see Healaugh Crag, Old Gang lead mines and bulidings, Calver hill, Arkengarthdale, most of Fremington Edge, right down to Marrick Priory. I stand and take it in for a while. On a day like today it is hard to put into works how spectacular the scenery is up here in our beautiful little dale. It fills me with awe.

I stick to the moor track as it turns from a well maintained, hard core track to a grassy track that you can see has been used for vehicles but not for a long while. Nevertheless it guides me back down the hill side towards Gunnerside, sun beating into my eyes as I go. The sight of the village is a welcomed one, especially as I can see the only smoke coming from a chimney is at the pub… right where I’m headed for a hot coffee and a piece of cake.

The walk in total took me nearly 3 hours. I certainly wasn’t going fast, and was stopping to take the scenery in as I went. I wouldn’t say it was strenuous; gradually climbing for 3.5 miles on small, sometimes slippy footpaths until I got to the moor tracks at the top of the gill. From there it was much easier walking; and downhill all the way back to the village. If the walk was to be done in the opposite direction, it would be much more strenuous.
